Brianne M. Turgeon

Assistant Music Director

Brianne M. Turgeon was named Assistant Music Director in October 1999 and works primarily with the IMM, Training, and Treble Concert Choirs. Ms. Turgeon has her undergraduate degree in Music Education from the University of Georgia and her Master of Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi

(Hattiesburg). She has taught music in the  Butts County Schools, Gordon Junior College, Rockdale County Schools, and is presently with the Atlanta Public Schools. She is an active member of both the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus, and the a cappella women’s group YES , VIRGINIA!

William F. Nittler

Education Director

William F. Nittler was named Education Director in September of 1999. He studied at the University of Colorado at Boulder and received his undergraduate degree in music from Berklee College of Music (Boston). Mr. Nittler teaches private lessons for beginning to advanced woodwinds for both children and adults. He is also

an active free-lancer, and can be heard playing everything from jazz to klezmer to swing. Current projects include the 4th Ward Afro Klezmer Orchestra, Edgewood Saxophone Trio and the Jeff Crompton Quartet, and he can be heard most recently on the AKO CD released in October 2012.

Greg Hucks

Young Men’s Choir Instructor

Greg Hucks, named Young Men’s Choir Instructor in September of 2007, is a native  North Carolinian calling GA home since 1987. He is the Director of Choruses and MYP Music Instructor at Atlanta International School . He has directed music programs at Warren T. Jackson Elementary,  Sarah Smith Elementary, and

Sprayberry High School, where he earned a reputation for creativity and development of new programs. Mr. Hucks also works as a regular Music Instructor  with The Atlanta Children’s Theatre Company. He is a long-standing member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus and has also worked as a Producer, DJ, and Entertainment Manager at Greg Dean Music.

Virginia M. Thompson

Virginia M. Thompson was named Executive Director in November of 2004. She served on the AYS Board of Directors for six years, including 3 years as Treasurer. A graduate of Wellesley College with a B.A. in Music, Ms. Thompson also studied Vocal Performance and Music Production & Engineering at Berklee College of Music.

She sings professionally with the Atlanta Singers, directs and sings in the women’s a cappella group YES, VIRGINIA! and has been a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus for 19 seasons. A member of the Arts Leaders of Metro Atlanta Class of 2010, Chorus America and Americans for the Arts, she currently serves as a panelist for the Georgia Council for the Arts and Fulton County Arts Council. Ms. Thompson has worked in nonprofit arts management for over 25 years.

Paige F. Mathis

Paige Fumbanks Mathis was named Music Director of ATLANTA YOUNG SINGERS in May of 1998 and is the first holder of the Stephen J. Ortlip chair. Ms. Mathis received her undergraduate degree in Music Education from Jacksonville State University and her Master of Music degree in conducting from the

Conservatory of Music at University of Missouri - Kansas City. She founded the Youth Chorale in 1994 as an expansion program of ATLANTA YOUNG SINGERS. She is active in the Georgia Music Educators Association and  Chorus America, and currently serves as Repertoire and Standards Chair of the Georgia Division of American Choral Directors Association. She is a long-standing member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus where she sang and recorded under the baton of the late Robert Shaw. Ms. Mathis is also a proud AYS alumna.

Michelle Griffin

Michelle Griffin was named Recruitment & Communications Manager in November 2014. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education at the University of North Florida and has more than 10 years of experience in music administration. An Atlanta area native, she is an AYS Alumna and has been a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus since 2002. She has toured both at home and abroad including a UK tour with the opera Ainadamar.

Caroline Goldstein

Caroline Goldstein, named Training Choir Instructor in September 2010, received a B.A. in Music from Haverford College and an Ed.M. in Learning and Teaching from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.  Over the past six years, Caroline has taught general music, middle and high school choral music, and music theory and directed several musical theatre productions for elementary, middle, and college age students. In 2010, Caroline developed and taught a summer theatre class for middle school students through

the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Art Smarts program.  She currently teaches music at The Swift School in Roswell.  Caroline, an AYS alumna, is thrilled to return to AYS, working with Training & Introduction to Music Making Choirs!

Arietha Lockhart

Arietha Lockhart joined AYS as Training Choir Instructor in January 2016 after serving in the DeKalb County School system as K-5 Music Specialist and Director of both student and teacher Choruses at Redan, Medlock and Smokerise. A frequent clinician, she has served as DeKalb Elementary Honor Chair and conductor of Newton County Elementary Honor Chorus. As a professional vocalist, Ms. Lockhart has sung with both ASO Choruses and Robert Shaw Chamber and Festival Singers, performed as soloist for DeKalb New Teacher Orientation, the 1996 Centennial Olympics Opening Ceremony and Annual Commemoration Service for Martin Luther King, and won numerous vocal competitions and awards. We are thrilled to add another great vocalist and educator to our staff!

Stephen J. Ortlip

Stephen J. Ortlip, Founder of ATLANTA YOUNG SINGERS of Callanwolde and Music Director from 1975 to 1997, is a native of Englewood, NJ and holds a B.S. degree from Houghton College, a Master of Music Degree from Catholic University, and a Master of Sacred Music degree from Union Theological Seminary. He graduated from Guilmant Organ School in New Jersey and earned an Associate degree as a member of the American Guild of Organists.


He is the former Director of Chattanooga Boys Choir, Baylor School Glee Club, and Polymnia Choral Society and also organized and directed Palestrina Choir of Houghton, NY. An organist and choirmaster at numerous churches, he has been asked frequently to serve as guest conductor and clinician for regional, national, and international workshops.  His Chorister’s Workbook is the precursor to the current AYS Workbook, and his original compositions and arrangements, several published, are still performed by AYS Choirs. Our Alumni and current Singers are delighted that Mr. O and his accomplished wife Doris still attend AYS performances!

Millie Turek

Youth Chorale and

Training & Introduction to Music Making

Millie Lanier Turek joined AYS as Accompanist in September 2012 after accompanying Treble Concert Choir at the 2012 World Choir Games. She taught chorus for 32 years in Clayton and Fayette County Public Schools. With an undergraduate degree in music education from Florida State University and a Masters of Music from GSU, she has served as accompanist for and conducted honor and all-state choruses in AL, GA, and FL. Choirs under her direction have received numerous invitations to perform

at GMEA in-service and ACDA Southern division conventions. Her chorus at Sandy Creek High School was one of 12 choirs invited to sing in the first Chanticleer National Youth Choral Festival in 2012. Currently, Ms. Turek is preparing Newnan Centre Masterworks Youth Chorale for a trip to Ayr, Scotland and teaching chorus at Whitefield Academy.

AYS Accompanist Emeritus

William E. Krape

William E. Krape, original accompanist of ATLANTA YOUNG SINGERS of Callanwolde, is a native of Rome, GA. After receiving his Bachelor of Music degree from Shorter College (Rome, Georgia) he received his Masters degree in Performance from the University of Alabama. He was awarded the George C. Marshall Scholarship for a one-year study in Copenhagen.  Mr. Krape has been Choir Director and Organist for Oak Grove Methodist Church and Druid Hills United Methodist Church. ATLANTA YOUNG SINGERS of Callanwolde Accompanist from 1976 to 2012, Mr. Krape is an accomplished pianist as well as organist, and gives Atlanta area recitals at least four times annually. Mr. Krape is an outstanding composer and has composed or arranged over 20 pieces in addition to his numerous compositions for Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he currently serves as Organist Choirmaster.
